Do you think it's possible they are making a HT-based Barton?

You would need to convert it to SOI also. Of course, once AMD did want Barton on SOI, but ran into an undisclosed show stopper. Could it be done now? Maybe. Not cheap, though.

Also, what about the memory controller? AMD gets a big performance boost from this item, and the mobo makers get a cost reduction. Now, if you put on HT then you want to go to socket 754 (certainly not introduce a new socket).

Now, compare this approach with taking an A64, eliminate a bunch of cache and disable the 64-bit extensions. Instant low cost processor with very little risk, already proven to work on SOI manufacturing. So why would you start with a K7 with the inherent expense and risk?

AMD may feel very desperate in losing marketshare on low end.

That was the old AMD under Sanders. We see no evidence that Hector thinks this way. Let Intel have the low end, or fight Via and Transmeta for it (if they ever get their acts together). We'll skim off the cream, thank you.
