Few will short large cap stock.

I've generally shorted, in recent times, only large-cap stocks, and I've never paid interest.

Supply and demand for shares to borrow are on the shorter's side. Hence, paying a very low interest to the lender (probably the broker themselves lending from inventory), in your case perhaps charging nothing as there is no incentive for the broker to spend time on the admin involved.

Hope you called those large cap short positions correctly on larger than normal price moves.
