I was on a board that used "reputation" points. It was a horrible mess. Popular posters with "high reputation" regularly used their power to "punish" new posters or those with less popular opinions.

"KISS" works well here. Post on topic and everyone can have their own thoughts and opinions of the value of posts.

Popularity contests not only don't add value, they would remove value from this site.
