The reply I was starting with is regarding "user reputation" more broadly and not just the moderators. Just to find some middle ground and compromise. Here are the corresponding points:

many websites have user reputation. We can do it easily with mods or all posters. To be frank, it should probably be for all posters which would encompass moderator. So that's a better idea.

You can have positive reputation and negative reputation. It's basic social scoring and as you said, it's a way to help users/mods self govern themselves. Also since there's no ignore functionality - it would be beneficial to see ahead of time who you're engaging with. Imagine this scenario
someone with a negative score jumping into your conversation that was not intended for that person to answer - you can quickly decide if you want to respond back vs. being lured into a dialogue with someone who was going to be negative and has a history of such
