and worship us commies you little peon lithium miners and pull out your wallets to finance every piece of these new/existing lithium mines and then stuff our leftist/commie coffers with green untraceable cash... and maybe we will let you continue mining lithium in Chile.

... and in other news Anti-Mining Minister Marcela Hernando takes a victory lap around La Moneda https://www.latercera.com/pulso/noticia/ministra-de-mineria-por-politica-nacional-del-litio-se-recupera-para-el-estado/WWZGZDE6WNEPHOEAGVBUQULTVU/ see English translation below

Dear Congressional Deputies & Senators, simply vote in Congress to Repeal the Pinochet-era Strategic Mineral Classification on Lithium and you will immediately in one day put control over lithium mining back in the hands of Congress like copper, gold, silver is currently, thereby forever taking control over lithium out of UNELECTED/self-enriching bureaucrats... it is that simple.

Minister of Mining Marcela Hernando on NLP National Lithium Policy: "It is recovered for the State"
by Emiliano Carrizo

The Minister of Mining, Marcela Hernando, highlighted the alliances that the State will have with private companies for the exploitation of lithium and the importance that this activity be carried out with more environmentally friendly technology. However, Hernando also regretted that no progress was made on this issue during past governments.

The Minister of Mining, Marcela Hernando, highlighted the role that the State will have in the exploitation of lithium, but also regretted the time that elapsed for a government to promote a policy related to this highly demanded mineral due to its role in the energy transition for stop the advance of global warming.

"Lithium is recovered for the Chilean State and it is going to take control of this wealth that is tremendously valued," said Hernando as a summary of what the national lithium policy is that President Gabriel Boric presented yesterday on national television.

In an interview with Tele-13 radio, the Secretary of State estimated that “we should have started with this lithium issue more than 10 years ago. As a State, we have been quite slow and many governments have stopped doing many things. Progress began during the second government of former President Michelle Bachelet, a lithium commission was formed, recommendations were made, many of which are included (in the recently announced national lithium policy), but they were not implemented at the time." .

Hernando pointed out that the work in lithium has not been developed, in recent times, in line with the proposal of the current Executive for "a different vision of accessing this wealth." In this sense, the Minister of Mining pointed out that "it is not about bidding and that everyone comes to extract and extract, but that it is how we create an industry that stays and leaves added value to the country."

On how the alliances with the private sector will be to carry out lithium exploitation, Hernando pointed out that initially the private companies provide the initial capital and the technology and the State the will provide the lithium. However, the Secretary of State also qualified that each salt flat "has its particularities" and that is why each operation could be different from one another with respect to joint ventures.
“The State owns the lithium and is going to have special operating contracts. And therefore we expect the partners to put up the seed money and the technology.” he added he.

Another aspect that he highlighted about the state lithium initiative is its environmental area of leaving 30% of the salt flats preserved, and demanding a friendlier technology for lithium extraction. The latter is under development, but Hernando estimated that within the years required for the exploitation of lithium, permits and studies, said technology will already be operational.

“There are several companies that are carrying out pilots around the world and we think that, three years from now, this will be a more mature technology (...) requiring this technique for all new projects is not going to further delay the process," he said.

Regarding the business model, Hernando also explained that the invitation today is to create alliances with Codelco and ENAMI to carry out the exploration and exploitation of lithium salt flats, since they already have the authorized business and have made more progress in this matter.

"The possibility of there being tenders is also open, but only for exploration by the private sector, and if they do well, find lithium and it is profitable to extract it, they will be obliged, in order to have the right to exploit, to associate with the State," added.

On the other hand, Hernando was asked if within this national lithium policy she considered a discomfort that the government has with SQM. Due to the scandal related to the case of illegal financing of candidates and political parties by the firm, the minister explained that "there is a story from which one cannot refrain, but (this national lithium policy) has to do with with the mining industry. The mining income captured by the companies is very large (...) and we believe that it is not fair that, in the case of non-renewable minerals, the State does not receive greater compensation.

“Today (the contract with private companies) is being fair given the prices of the mineral, but we know that this is going to stabilize (...) that is a cycle that is going to happen, but regarding the lithium cycle, in terms of demand and supply of the need that the world has today to have a supply of lithium, there is still a long way to go (for it to end), this will last two to three decades," said Hernando as an evaluation of the contracts that today the State has with firms such as SQM and Albemarle.

In this line, the Secretary of State explained that the contracts that the State has today with private companies pose a floor on the relations that will be considered in the future in new projects.

In relation to copper, the Minister of Mining ruled out any change to the concession system that exists today and stated that this type of discussion remains for the instance of drafting a new Constitution.
