Granted these umpires are the only guys who have had problems with pitchers in the past. But I agree even if Max is telling the truth, and too be fair I think he is. But baseball has included if you use two much of a sticky substance (Rozen and sweat) which are both legal, what is too much I have no idea, and probably neither do the players. They can still claim it is illegal (Which is my opinion is and absurd rule if you can't quantify). Now as I said these umpires are the only one's who had problems with pitchers in the past. He will still get his 10 game suspension, most likely because even if he is correct if umpire deem he used too much sweat and rozen so to be fair I think he is gonna get suspended because of the way the rule is written.
Now a more common sense approach would be to look at was it significantly helping spin rate. And it was significant like when the guy were using the other stuff, that brought on the rule to start. Because the reason for the rule is does it significantly enhance your performance say spin rate the other stuff pitchers use to get 3-4 times as much help as scherzer was yesterday, and too be fair that can be simply explained by scherzer not pitching for a few extra day, hence he was stronger, hence a little higher spin rate. I don't think Scherzer did anything, but I do think he will get suspended because of the idiotic rule, that even if used sweat and rosen I believe he can still get suspended if the umpires deem as excess, all umpires defintion of excess, who in the world knows? Could you imagine if we just eyeballed a car to see if was speeding or just made arbitrary ideas of what speeding was in a zone. And every cop was asked to enforce excess speed. One guy pulls over a guy for 30 mph, one guy 35, one guy 40. The rule would be a disaster if they did that, hence you aways need a quantifiabe number and to me if the two substances are legal, than it should be fair. And if your concerned they are lying just check the spin rate, if the jump is huge than use that as evidence if there is linmited to no jump than maybe we just say play on after you kick the guy out, although the umpires should get spin rate numbers right than and there if you want to enfore this properly. It should be based on the Spin rate being substancially out of whack, unless you can litterally prove the guy has a foreign substance in my opinion.
