We should find out very soon whether Berman's pre-trial release revocation was permanent or temporary. Hearing was today. Order will no doubt be communicated soon.
I actually pity him now. From my research, US remand jails are grim dehumanising places.
A form of purgatory.
Prisons have a job to do. There is a hierarchy of controls and opportunities and a defined pathway and purpose. There is certainty and meaning.
Remand jails are the airport departure lounges of the penal system.
Soulless and hopeless. Eternally indefinite.
Their sole purpose is to get their incumbents somewhere else with minimum cost and disruption to the conveyer, irrespective of the impact upon the conveyed.
I can't decide whether Keith is an egomaniac or a paranoid schizophrenic?
I like to think that now his worst fears have come to pass, he has become reconciled to them.
But I am genuinely torn here.
I hate the idea of Berman being at large as he is an arch manipulator and clear and present danger to anyone he interacts with. Its not safe to let him out. He will thumb his nose and revert to type.
At the same time, I would not wish the dehumanising brutality of US jails on anyone.
My only 'out' is that I guess Berman himself would likely happily wish the dehumanising brutality of US jails on a great many people, most of whom were not endowed with his own socio-economic and racial privileges. And he would probably not bat an eyelid when doing so.
There are many like him.
The winners in this situation are the now non existent 'victims' of Berman's inevitable next scam whatever that would have been had he been allowed to continue unchecked.
These are real people with real lives. And I bet there are more than a few folk out there right now wishing they had got a proper hold of Berman last time out and saved them from an inordinate degree of pain and misery!
But potential future victims aside ....everyone else is a victim.
I guess I just wish Berman had thought and acted differently. So that he himself.... as well as everyone else... would have been better off as a result.
You see.... Justice is not nice.
But (sometimes) at least it can be... just!
I think its OK to deplore the crimes. But pity the criminal!
