Good news for doctors and patients. Some insurers are dropping or cutting back on prior authorizations (PA). Law makers are pushing insurers to remove PA’s to ease the burden on doctors and patients and to get patients the right medication. PA’s have negatively effected the uptake of Vascepa and many other drugs. This was intentional on the part of payers to restrict access to certain medications. Lawmakers are also looking into PBM’s and their use of high tiering, high copays and spread pricing that significantly increase cost burden and restrict access to effective medications. Doctors have been avoiding medicines that required PA’s in favor of less effective medications that didn’t require PA’s, like GL. I argue that the only meds that should require a PA is skinny label medications to keep them in their lane of use. Legislation is coming but a bit too late for AMRN as the damage has been done.
