Dietary fiber intake and Alzheimer's:

I found Amatuer17's linked article interesting. It describes "a pathway that begins in the gut and ends with a potent pro-inflammatory toxin [BF-LPS] in brain cells contributing to the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD)." It then says, "Bacteroides fragilis abundance in the microbiome, which is the source of the neurotoxin BF-LPS, can be regulated by dietary fiber intake."

This made me wonder whether any population studies have found a correlation between dietary fiber intake and Alzheimer's. They have. In a study published in 2022,

Investigators administered a dietary survey to 3700 healthy adults at midlife and then followed them for up to 20 years. They found that participants who consumed the most fiber had approximately a 25% lower risk of developing dementia in later life.

The study revealed that people who consumed the most daily fiber had the lowest rates of dementia. The reverse also was true — those who ate the least fiber had the highest rates. Specifically, the low-risk group consumed an average of 20 grams daily, while those with the highest risk averaged only 8 grams.
