... my Safari is by now quite old, and for the past couple of years hasn't been supported.


That is not the problem. I only use Safari on a MacBook that is supported and I keep it updated. I still have the problem clicking "Next" that you reference. But is its a non-determinate anomaly. Sometimes "Next" works, sometimes it does not.
