Go into a Starbucks and ask any employee about their companies stock option reward plan. It is not completely asinine to expect the average employee to know a thing or two about the company they work for.. And yes maybe they were new so we can give them that benefit of the doubt.
Why wouldn't the management give the employees some background of the company and where they plan to go in the future. Question the average employee should be asking during an interview even. That is pretty basic.
