An interesting article from September of 2016.

https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/liquid-silicon-li-ion-battery-anodes

Doug Freitag was the spokesman for 3Dicon. (yeah it is that old) There are a couple interesting stats provided on CHS vs monosilane, one of which is the cost difference between the two. Freitag ‘admitted’ that monosilane could be had for a little as one dollar per kilogram. CHS on the other hand was more like 100 dollars. He does go on to say that silicon made with CHS will have greater capability, one of those is that it can be mixed with other compounds and boron is mentioned. If you read Coretec’s silicon anode patent you you’ll see immediately in the abstract that boron along with nitrogen, sulfur, aluminum and phosphorous. Further, a silicon nitride anode of the type covered in the Coretec patent might not even be possible without CHS. The first few lines of the summary read as follows:

“A method according to an example of the present disclosure includes producing a silicon nitride (SiNx) based anode by combining a silicon precursor that includes cyclohexasilane and a nitrogen precursor”.

Further embodiments mentioned include boron and a whole host of chemicals/compounds that could be utilized because CHS mixes with them, unlike a gaseous monosilane. I am NOT a chemist, this is what I’ve made of the information and I still won’t pretend to have even a clue about what is going on with CHS in regards to scaling/manufacturing the material, but from what I can see based on what is contained in the old article I linked to and also in the Coretec anode patent the real (and lucrative) pursuit is the battery technology. If the Endurion battery utilizes CHS to outperform (Google and read about SiNx anodes) other designs that have silicon anodes you can see how they might have cornered the market here. Time will tell as they say, but hopefully not too much time. Silicon anodes might be the next evolution of the battery, but they won’t be here forever. New designs are already in the works to replace them so we don’t actually have all the time in the world.
