At the Tirana summit held a few days ago, the European Union approved an energy aid package worth 1 billion euros for the 6 countries of the Western Balkans, Albania, Serbia, Bosnia, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro.

According to the official statement issued by Brussels immediately after the meeting, the package aims at addressing immediate, short-term and medium-term needs in the Western Balkans in the context of the ongoing energy crisis.

With this support, the European Commission aims to help Western Balkan partners to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels, decarbonization and improve energy security. From the 500 million euro grant, Albania benefits from 80 million euro.

The second part of the package of 500 million euros will be divided into three directions, 170 million euros of investments (in which Albania has not qualified with any project), 100 million euros for energy efficiency and 230 million euros of guarantees for the private sector.

output of 136 MW. The energy demand of 93,000 households will be met.

The sixth project is the wind energy park in Kostolac, Serbia. In this project, which costs a total of 145 million euros, the EU grant is 31.2 million euros . This project will install a 66 MW production sufficient for 45,000 households.

100 million euros for regional energy efficiency

From the second half of the 500 million euro grant, 100 million euro will be used to promote projects related to energy efficiency. This amount does not yet have a regional breakdown by country, but will be used for projects that promote energy conservation, reduce pollution from energy production, and improve living standards related to energy efficiency.

230 million euro guarantee for the private sector, there is no division by country

From the second half of the energy package of 500 million euros, 230 million euros will be used as a guarantee for the private sector. The beneficiaries will be SMEs that would be financially supported by the EU for the production of clean energy. This grant will be distributed through 6 calls and will be distributed based on criteria that will be met by businesses throughout the Region. /Monitor
