Introduction
In a single Internet minute, we send over 20 million texts, 200 million emails, and watch 28,000 movies. And this enormous amount of activity looks set to grow exponentially, by about 23 percent year-on-year. This means that in 2024 we will add as much data as the whole world was using in 2018.
Alongside this growth in usage, the number of connections is also growing at a staggering rate. Not only are humans connecting with smartphones, but machines connecting to other machines. In fact, by 2023, there will be two machines connecting for every one human being on the planet.
The consequence, the energy consumption of data centres and communication will become a bottleneck if nothing is done.
