With the continuous development of Virtual Reality (VR) and Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), the way humans interact with the world is quietly changing. BCI-VR is a new paradigm of BCI application that combines the advantages of BCI and VR. Recently, BCI-VR is applied in the fields of medical rehabilitation, multimedia and entertainment, and has a broad application prospect.

It is understood that WiMi Hologram Cloud, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIMI), “the first share of holographic AR”, is actively promoting the R&D of its BCI-VR system based on its technical foundation in VR and BCI, and will explore the application of BCI-VR system in the field of game entertainment. Compared with traditional game scenes, the interaction of BCI-VR based system can provide more direct and intuitive scenes, and may overcome some limitations in a pure VR environment. In particular, the BCI-VR system, which relies mainly on visual stimuli, will greatly enhance the gaming experience as users can implement controls in the VR environment by simply gazing at or directly focusing their attention on the items to be operated.

WiMi’s BCI-VR gaming system combines BCI with VR to simulate and present a virtual gaming world, providing users with real-time situational feedback and timely response to control commands from the BCI system. It provides more realistic, rich, proactive and motivating contextual feedback, direct and faster interaction, thus providing more immersive user experience.

VR is realized through a 3D spatial model built by computer. Computer generates a comprehensive perceptible virtual world with visual sensation as the main feature, complemented by auditory and tactile sensation, allowing users to feel a sense of immersion in this environment and to be able to interact with the surrounding environment and things. Currently, the interaction between human and virtual environment is mainly carried out by mouse, keyboard, joystick, etc. The interaction is relatively limited, which might hinder users experience. If new interaction methods can be developed, the immersion could be further enhanced.

BCI is a direct connection between the human brain and external devices, which does not rely on conventional brain information output pathways (e.g., peripheral nerves and muscle tissue). It is a new technology for external information exchange and control. BCI acquires Electroencephalogram (EEG), performs a series of operations such as noise canceling, feature extraction and classification recognition on EEG signals to identify the brain’s intention, and finally converts this idea into control commands of peripheral devices, thus realizing the function of directly controlling external devices through the brain.

By combining BCI with VR, it has the following advantages:
on the one hand, VR can be used as an information feedback tool for BCI system: compared with the traditional BCI feedback mode, VR provides more realistic, richer, more active and motivating contextual feedback. On the other hand, BCI can be used as an input device for VR; compared with traditional interaction methods such as mouse, joystick, etc., the BCI provides more direct and convenient way to input to the VR system, creating more immersive experience.

BCI-VR is a typical closed-loop working system that uses feedback to link output to input, and informs participants whether their intended behavior is correct through feedback. The BCI-VR system mainly contains three parts:
- BCI system:
This includes two parts:
EEG signal acquisition module and EEG signal intelligent analysis software. The module adopts a non-invasive method to acquire the scalp EEG signal of the subject, and the number of channels and electrode positions of the acquisition module will be adjusted according to the application. The software is responsible for noise canceling, feature extraction, selection, and sorting of the EEG signal, and then generates control commands to external devices.

- VR system:
VR is used to simulate and display a virtual world, providing users with real-time situational feedback and timely response to control commands from the BCI system.

- Communication interface between the two systems:
The communication interface is responsible for the real-time communication between the BCI system and the VR system. For one part, the control commands generated by the BCI system are transmitted to the VR system through the communication interface, and for the other, the feedback system generated by the VR system is fed back to the subject through the communication interface.

In the BCI-VR system, the BCI is mainly responsible for outputting commands so that users can manage these commands simply, efficiently and directly through thinking and then transmit them to the VR system. While the VR system mainly undertakes the task of sensory stimulation and feedback, and is able to present the sensory stimuli required by the BCI as well as induce the physiological signals required as soon as possible and provide meaningful feedback that enable users to control BCI.


The combination of BCI and VR technology can realize the complementary advantages of the two technologies. On the one hand, VR technology can be used as an information feedback tool for BCI systems, providing more proactive and motivating contextual feedback; on the other hand, the BCI can be used as an input device for VR, providing direct and faster input, and more immersive VR experience.
BCI-VR system has a broad application prospect in medical rehabilitation, game entertainment, smart home and other fields, although it is still facing some difficulties in the actual application, we believe that with the continuous development of computer information technology, many technical bottlenecks will be overcome. And BCI-VR system will be improved in the future as its application prospect not yet completely explored.
