The title Ken posted said EV and Plandai "close on merger." In that context the word "close" could be interpreted as being "near" to something though the more appropriate term for that would be "close TO." However, any ambiguity seems resolved when he said--.

PLPL "today announces the closing of a merger with EV Hotels."

"Closing" is an adjective defined as "bringing something to an end; final." Example: one goes to a "closing" when they finalize the purchase of a property.

He went on to say the agreement "which closed November 1" and followed that with details and concluded by saying this goal had been "checked off" his list. It's pretty clear what he was saying... the deal was done. But it clearly wasn't.
