TAMPA: I agree...

with your last sentence, "For them to remain the latter, [ubiquitously and objectively supportive to all] they'd either have to own attestation as an independent defender of open systems, or completely give it away (yet support it with services) to those that may be too proud to let them own it."

Furthermore, I consider the probability well in excess of 50% that it will be the latter (the give-away) that is the end result. Consider Java. Seriously.
