It is not LWLG. Part of POETs platform mentioned in that release uses directly modulated lasers (no modulators). Really only usable in short reach applications. Funny I’ve seen some POET investors scream that them using DMLs will make LWLGs technology obsolete. What’s even funnier is when LWLG starts providing extremely fast and efficient modulators with 100Gbaud NRZ, it could lessen the need for solutions such as POET and could allow the other 1,000 packaging companies/methods in the market to be “good enough”.

POETs modulator of choice is TFLN, of course, since they would not be allowed to use LWLG’s polymers and TFLN is a bit more mature.

I have some shares of POET because I like photonics. But their investment case is murky which is stopping me from investing more. They formed a JV with a Chinese foundry where the foundry puts up the capital/equipment in exchange for the IP. The JV has exclusive rights to 100,200,400G in Asian markets. POETs ownership of the JV is forecasted to be reduced to between 25-50%. Margin guidance was just released in August and it’s lower than many expected. Also since then, they said for 800G (2x400, so under JV umbrella), they’re going to not just make “optical engines”, but entire transceiver modules. To me, that screams big money capital will be needed in the future aka more dilution.

Management track record on the business end of things is not good and they’re about to do a capital raise at 10 year lows. They thought spending $4k a month on tweets and YouTube videos was going to get the stock price up after NAS uplist. They finally put out a real PR yesterday even though it’s regurgitated ‘news’.

Now, be aware that recently on POETs message board (not Ihub), there was some discussion about members moving to Ihub to attract US investors aka try to convince LWLG money to go into POET.

For a technical insight and a comparison on DLMs and EMLs, see this Reddit post from PhotonicsGuy.
