More evidence for the EV takeover of the auto industry - just looking at the US misses more than half of worldwide data. The article seems to have an estimate of hydrogen energy that surprised the heck out of me. It seems to suggest that a gallon of diesel fuel carries the same energy content as one kg of hydrogen:

'Global hydrogen production amounted to about 90 million metric tons, or 90 billion kilograms, the rough equivalent of 90 billion gallons of diesel'

https://www.barrons.com/articles/energy-iea-evs-carbon-emissions-51663944751?siteid=yhoof2

Given my generally skeptical nature and my background as a chemical engineer, I decided to check out this claim, since it is SO easy.

Here is what I found for energy content:

1 gallon of Diesel has a Lower Heating Value of 138,412 but.
1 kilogram of hydrogen has a Lower Heating Value of 60,920 BTU/lb, which is roughly equivalent to the diesel value

See

By he way the distinction between Lower Heating Value and Higher Heating Value is based on the state of one of the combustion products, WATER.

From Wikipedia:

Higher heating value (HHV) is calculated with the product of water being in liquid form while lower heating value (LHV) is calculated with the product of water being in vapor form.

I use LHV because that is how water is produced in a diesel engine.
