From the very little I know about remote towns in Italy (and likely elsewhere) renovations are very difficult for so many reasons - it's not like they have a Home Depot or Lowe's so finding product isn't super easy...then getting it transported to your home...then getting it installed and in a timely manner as well as kick backs needed, etc. We were in Sicily with a friend who is an Italian winemaker (here in US these days) and just the red-tape and "politics" of getting anything done there - so much is under the table, etc. - he just made it very daunting to consider living in a remote area.
