Oh, and one more thing ... while I'm not sure about drives with perpendicular magnetic recording surfaces, most drives at 7200 RPM's can't collect more than 72MB/Sec (or so - memory issues on my part 
) data off the platter thru the heads to the I/O for the drive.
Dunno about driver / I/O / DMA latencies, but that's slicing hair on a mechanical device like a hard drive.
