MeghanStar, there were patents for both polymers and devices that I reviewed.

Most of the devices I reviewed did not specify which polymer (whether pre-existing or TBD in the future). They also did not limit themselves to polymers only, as other materials were also mentioned. I am guessing this was probably on purpose to allow for room to maneuver and apply the best polymer that is available on the market to suit a given need at a specific time.

I believe foundries can patent their processes, but I am not certain how specific they need to be regarding the naming of a specific polymer.
