I won't criticize his personal appearance, but I believe he is deep in this with his reputation and ego at stake that he just keeps digging the grave deeper and deeper. And that has to have a cost for someone. People don't do that without psychological deterioration. That may be what you noticed. I did not see him in person and he has always seemed to play that guy, which is kind of a way to appear to be a "hard nails journalist."

A friend of mine is a top editor at the top paper in NYC. When he was younger, he had other jobs in journalism. I would hang with him and his friends at small parties and they would talk about parties and drinking and bars like everyone in journalism was a derelict alcoholic. My friend was not like that, as far as I know. But my sense was that his appearance is all a part of a kind of way to project that he doesn't care about money or anything, he's just a "journalist doing his job" and "standing up for the regular guy". But that appearance is superficial, from what we all know. People put on the costume that they think best fits how they want to appear in their profession and Adam claims, I think most of us think falsely, that he is working against the bad guys in biotech and therefore advancing shareholder interests. But it's BS, as we all know. He is constantly, basically harassing the best scientists in various fields of discovery and medicine, and it basically always feels that he does it disingenuously, but with that same pose. IMHO, he's a poseur.
