It’s a mudpit filled with drilling fluid. They use a water based mud that has multiple additives. You won’t necessarily see a mudpit filled with oil as thickened drilling fluid is circulating throughout the system. Weight of the mud will keep downward pressure on any oil but gas could not easily be is the pressure is high enough. If there is a “kick” of hydrocarbons guess what happens? The rams on the BOP close and the well is now closed while pressure is monitored. KyOil could add more color to this.
