Good points, Mac1957. Blackouts happen like in the previous Texas Winter when the Windmills were frozen. Last I heard, California is suffering rolling brownouts.
Electric system stability was seriously addressed nationally and regionally after the 1965 Northeast Blackout.
Yet as time passes, silly politicians have their way so there was less new generation in New England as they pleased their NIMBY constituents. The 2003 Northeast Blackout was blamed on lack of tree trimming under Ohio transmission lines. OHIO IS A LONG WAY FROM NEW ENGLAND. Professional Engineers in Ohio formed "Power Engineers Supporting Truth" to make sure that Wash DC and New England knew the consequences of bad political electrical decisions.
As you wrote, "if AC is off for an extended time we hook up a generator to keep the batteries charged." Unfortunately, it's much worse for major Blackouts as batteries drain over time. Hydrogen Fuel Cells are a good alternative, but likely it will take another major Blackout to stimulate corrective action.
Some regions do have large gas-driven turbine generators for cold startup after a Blackout but again that takes time for a major Blackout.
