It's far more probable that the statistical analysis plan anticipated calculating a two sided p value (as is standard for clinical trials) rather than a one sided p value. One sided p of 0.05 is not as impressive as a two sided p of 0.05 (see below where it is easier to hit 0.05 on one sided). Significance on a one sided test would be met at 0.025 not 0.05

Significant differences can be positive or negative. However, as a rule, the FDA, company, investors and patients care more about benefit not worsening. Therefore a two sided p value with the significance being in the favorable direction is the hoped for outcome.

The change in language just matches up the predefined analysis plan with the endpoint. We really are not interested in a change that is not favorable.
