Are the shares held at DTC The float?
If an issuer's securities are DTC eligible, it will hold an inventory of free-trading street name shares on deposit. These free-trading shares are also known as the “public float."

Are shares held at DTC part of the float?
If DTC approves the application, they will hold all of the issuer's free-trading, or street name, shares on deposit. These shares become the company's “float.” As with a Form 211 submission to FINRA, an issuer cannot make a direct application to the DTC for eligibility.

What are shares held at DTC mean?
That means they deposit and hold securities at the DTC, which appear in the records of an issuer's stock as the sole registered owner of those securities deposited at the DTC. The participants—the banks and the broker-dealers—own a proportionate interest in the aggregate shares of an issuer held at DTC.

Can shares held at DTC be traded?
While there is no requirement that any security be held at DTC to trade, many brokerage firms and issuers want to take advantage of the efficiencies and costs benefits that DTC offers. Also, many stock exchanges require DTC-eligibility prior to listing of a security
