It is possible the large short position is due to some knowing that Lightwave isn't part of the GF initiative with polymers -- maybe Ayar found a solution that doesn't require Lightwave tech and the shorts know it.

If GF makes some kind of announcement and it doesn't include Lightwave the stock will be taking a hard hit - at least for the short term.

Would help the stock if Lightwave decides to announce some of the Foundries partners they are working with. When I asked a few weeks ago why companies like NLM mention the foundries they are working with but Lightwave doesn't, it was said that was due to secrecy by Lightwave, and not the Foundries.
