Another good read regarding Saudi Arabia & successful deep well drilling. The Manifa Drilling Team set a new record in December 2011 when it finished drilling the longest well in Saudi Arabia to a total depth of 32,136 ft (± 9.8 km) and completed a horizontal power water injector across the Lower Ratawi reservoir.

Of note, Russia holds the record with their Kola Superdeep Borehole SG-3 deep well (trying to prove out the Abiotic Oil Theory imo). In terms of depth below the surface, the Kola Superdeep Borehole SG-3 retains the world record at 12,262 meters (40,230 ft) reached in 1989 and is still the deepest artificial point on Earth. (they didn't find anything of real value and temps became too hot to continue)
