Here's an informative read on the SEI layer and how it comes to be. It reads "The interfacial reactions relating to the SEI layer are a vital factor in battery function", and then the author "Forge Nano" says that they can 'prevent' the formation of an SEI layer with Atomic Layer Deposition coatings. These two ideas seem in conflict with one another, why do you want to prevent something that is vital to function? Regardless, it is one of the better articles I've come across on this component of a lithium ion type battery.
