I agree with you about the ghost cities, in 2008 I was unfortunate enough to see much the same thing here. I had property in the suburbs of Atlanta that were rentals, in both cases the tenants were both destructive, and went months without paying a thing, based on Georgia law. I'd owned both properties for nearly 15 years, each had thousands of dollars worth of repairs and neither was worth over half of what was still owed the banks. I let them be foreclosed. At the same time I learned just how overbuilt the Atlanta area had become, brand new tracts of housing were being bulldozed rather than fund what was needed to finish them off, they were nearly completed. It was clear that no one could forecast what was happening in the economy back then, and I believe Atlanta largely recovered, but back then it was like the ghost cities in China, they built but the people didn't come.

I know a professor who's an expert on China who teaches in both countries. He holds China in high regard and does believe they'll be an economic powerhouse for the foreseeable future. It's hard to say whether the U.S. or China will be dominant by the next century. While it may not matter to any of us, it will be of concern to our heirs.

Right now if climate change isn't dealt with properly none of our heirs may have much of a world to live in, though hopefully life will go on. Think of how much land would be underwater with oceans 10 ft. higher, they could easily go far more than that. Temperatures at both poles have been up to 70 degrees above the norm, it won't be long before ice melt will be substantial if things don't turn around.
