Shorts are hiding their closings. Shares are being removed from the balance between closing & next opening. Then the same # of shorts are being closed next day so that the end of day balance doesn't change from day to day.

Shorts are hiding their closings so that they don't drive SP higher and make more expensive for themselves.

This also means they are not that in-the-money. Otherwise they'd go long first to lock their gain/loss before closing. Translation = They can be squeezed!!!
