Plenty of people WERE like them. There was Charles Lindbergh, visiting Hitler in Germany and starting up his America First campaign. Most of the country was isolationist. That wasn't totally unreasonable: they'd been through WWI, and then the Depression, and they were separated from Europe by an ocean. They thought we should stay out of any European conflict, and some approved of Hitler and fascism.
