With all due respect,
You are only looking at one side of his education. The sociology degree has no bearing in this sector per se.
The other side to Koos is his investment side. He worked in investments and holds a degree on that side.
Most likely he was an analyst within an investment company/fund.
With that being said, chances are he worked in the biotech investment side.
Now what is the point?
The point is, when you have access to information (and a job that goes deep into information of a particular sector), you come away with knowledge of "pre-trends" in that sector.
What do I mean by that?
More than likely, Koos was already well versed in this sector on small molecule checkpoints and cancer vaccines before most people who are in the "investment world (aka retail investors)."
What he did was looked at the information or had connections in the science field that gave him the possible "up and coming" science "trends."
So, what is the point of all of this?
Koos was ahead of the curve and most likely had connections to the science world. With that information, he decided to start his own company and gather the people working in the field to try and create a business.
It isn't abnormal.
And finally, this guy was WAY ahead of current science practices. The NR2F6 inhibitor is an intracellular protein not an extracellular protein. Big difference.
Best of luck.
