In addition to your very correct observation, I have read that SARS-CoV-2 variants are being found in non-human animal populations. The article I read specifically called out deer in high percentages.

Just imagine the myriad of mutations that will be spit out from the animal kingdom!

It appears we will be dealing with COVID-19 the rest of our natural lives and way beyond. Eventually, it is likely to become endemic and we will likely get an annual (or more often) vaccine along with the flu du jour vaccine, perhaps a combo cocktail jab.
