It is Omrikron development that causes the panic in UK Germany and DK (and I suppose elsewhere in Europe also).

There have been a number of restrictions reinstated in most European countries. Masks is mandatory in shops transportation - indoors more than 20 people.

In Denmark - schools . childcare - 100% closed down from today until the 4. of January 2022 (and could easily be extended if considered necessary).

100% it is the fast spread of Omrikron authorities fear - with the health systems collapsing if they loose control of the spread.

NB. Could certainly be as you suggest - the new strain putting so much pressure on health systems that - everything else (not life threatening) is put of.
