Generally speaking, they are considered the gold standard in drug regulation. One can always point at areas where such regulators screwed up. One can also point at the drug epidemic from opioids as well. No question they have had terrible screw-ups. In my opinion, the opiod scandal is the biggest scandal, not Biogen's approval. That looks like it may have been problematic, but it has not killed a lot of ordinary people yet, certainly.

Nonetheless, in terms of science and standards generally, when it is working, which is in most cases, it is seen as the gold standard by drug regulators in many countries. Now they may like their regulators better, but the FDA is regulating the most important and complex drugs and drug trials usually first.

Some other countries want that mantle, but they are getting it by basically removing regulatory oversight and approving drugs under low requirements much more quickly, which is not necessarily the way to be seen as a better regulator.

The FDA has big plans for reforming and speeding up the regulation. I think that will be seen globally as a model to follow. We're seeing it with countries rushing to join Project Orbis. So yes, they are considered one of the world's top drug regulators, though they have made some really big mistakes.
