I think many of us are on the same page!! AND your comment that many start ups are "partnered" or "purchased" along the way is "The Way" a lot of the time.I'm involved with another small biotech company managed by the brightest and best and after 2 years they saw the wisdom of partnering with a major. A comment from a doctor on the team,,"It's far better to partner with a major, gaining their experience and financial support even though I thought at first that we were giving up way too much, only to realize later that keeping something is far better than ending up with nothing!"
