I never heard Chris articulate what today's mainstream republican party stands for or what policy proposals for everyday Americans they've put forward.

Actually, you have. I've said they're driven by over the top conspiracy theories that at this point are anti-American. The Republican Party stopped standing for anything when the Bush administration fabricated reasons to invade Iraq. And just recently, I said this:

The problem is the mainstream Democrats have lost their way too. Their desire to have a 2nd $3T infrastructure bill makes that plain to see. They insist that the US is "systemically racist" which isnt true. They claim men earn more than women for the same job and job performance, which isnt true. They believe that global warming is the biggest problem facing America today when in fact its China's continued increasing use of coal for the past 15 years that has caused the record CO2 levels on the planet. And then there's illegal immigration ....

In combination, these beliefs accelerate the genocide of large portions rural America. Their way of life is doomed anyways, but the Democratic Party currently stands in favor of making it happen a lot quicker.
