I guess it would be ironic if, in the end, Judge Du's ruling set in motion a series of events that ultimately led to a buyout, though at a much lower premium than anyone might have imagined two years ago. In the end, the dreamed-for scenario might even feel bittersweet. We'll all be saying: "What could have been never was."

But, from a buyer's standpoint, there will never be a longer stretch of years protected by patents in most of the world. If I was a potential buyer, though, I'd want to first get a sense of what the real potential is in European countries and how quickly it might catch on. Maybe watch it for six months to a year before pulling the trigger.
