Some of the most popular ones on IHUB are outright junk that use inscrutable leverage and option writing. There's also a cousin, ETNs or Exchange Traded Notes, that have other kinds of risks. Munger has railed against the new breed of highly leveraged ETFs as dangerous gambling instruments.

No argument there. For the new investor which the article points out stick with traditional ETFs tied to something you can understand.
