The reason why we know he was on loan from Merck is because his compensation package didn’t include any options. He could not go back to Merck holding options for a company they may acquire - and as we all know, LP gives out options and warrants like candy; but not in this case.

Also, the timing of his arrival and departure was brief and followed the period during the SAP process and likely discussions with the RAs.

I think he was quietly on loan from Merck
