Off by a decade? I actually have seen many bios make ridiculous predictions of 1 to 2 years to be off by many years, usually more in the 6-7 year range. It is unfortunate, but the expectations of corporate people frequently do not match the realities of universities and researchers.

As for the trial taking this long, we know all the various cause and challenges, and even the delays of regulators changing guidance and taking a year to take comments, etc. The no doubt could have pushed ahead regardless of consequences, to meet expectations on time, but I doubt that would have been the best way to proceed. I am sure you know this too, but it sounds good to focus on the long time and suggest it means insincerity rather than diligence and care.
