If we are going into a recession, what sectors are most vulnerable to dropping? What are some of the better ways to protect a diversified portfolio?

Selling (for me) is not a very attractive option due to average LT capital gains greater than 200%.
$10 originally now $50. Sell, pay (15%fed+5%state) taxes on $40=$8.
A recession cuts 10% off the market or I lose 16% to taxes, damned if I hold, damned if I sell.
