2 things, #1----I agree totally, but I suppose folks say things to be polite, or maybe think they are words of comfort....are they correct----no, but then a Christian can't say to a mother, sorry about your son, I know he is burning in hell for the crap that he did.....That is as wrong as saying rest in peace. I think the term has just become a figure of speech
