Sharing life stories? Raised in the country with six siblings, small Midwest dirt farm, livestock, and sunup to sundown, hot sweaty, dirty work in the summer, freezing cold outdoor chores in the winter. Two-room school, grades 1 - 8, graduated in bottom 10% of high school class

Took several blue collar jobs after high school, joined the military, took night classes, then went to community college full time, in my 40s, with a little help from loans. Been through the financial setback of a divorce, and have had a rough row to hoe.

Earned three Associate Degrees, and three vocational certificates. Also, studied abroad one summer. Graduated with a 4.0 GPA, on the President's List.

Disadvantaged upbringing doesn't have to be the end of life's road. At any point in one's life, a conscious decision can be made to take, or create, an opportunity.......but it has to be a conscious decision. It's not just handed out to most, anyway.

The desire to move out, above, and beyond any current situation needs to be there, though. And in most people it lies just below the surface of getting complacent, and being too comfortable remaining at a level below where one can climb up from.

Nothing is out of reach.......however, the initial effort to make a grab for it is necessary.
