Basically, you need to do what was done today. That 55k buy at 1.41 was placed when 1.41 was the ask. It cleared out the available 1.41's and then sat on the bid for hours getting filled a little at a time. The mm's will almost always run away from a large order hoping you'll chase and put more in their pockets.

My basic rule of thumb is if I'm sitting on the best bid, the order will generally get filled even if it is large unless news hits like it did to you (the same happened to me once also). If there are other buyers out there who jump over you, you will probably need to break it up into smaller bites and do the same thing: hit the ask and then let it sit on bid until filled. The main thing is to not chase or they will short to you at a high price and then bring it back down to cover.
