According to some friends who recently repatriated back to U.S., a negative PCR test is required within 72 hours of your arrival, and this is checked when you depart. However, if a U.S. citizen enters the country at their final destination and is not transiting, then they are not being asked to present a negative PCR test. But of course, they had the test results (in English) due to the fact that they needed them to depart the country they left and the country they transited through (negative PCR within 48 hours of arrival in many European nations). The timing is tricky and you almost have to find a vendor that offers rapid results (2 hours) and have it administered the same day as the first leg of your flight, especially if you have long layovers.
