I am a know-nothing, BUT, thinking outside the box: Is it possible that when Amarin was deciding whether to partner in Europe or go-it-alone, it reached a deal last summer with its neighbor up the street, Merck. As part of the deal, Merck arranged to install someone it trusted to launch Europe with the understanding that JT would announce his pending retirement in April with a buyout to be announced in June or July?

Then Karim returns to Merck, a company he only left two years ago, in an even more powerful position. This way, Merck is launching in Europe on its schedule and ultimately with its people, utilizing the experience it's developed over decades and strengthening its brand overseas.
