I think the easiest answer is the right one to most of the questions.

No, they don’t care about shareholders.

Yes, they are only interested in their own personal benefit.

Yes, they attack each other for self gain.

Yes, they work together when it’s convenient but then stab each other in the back when they have the chance.

They’ve perpetuated this sham because they profit from it. I have a theory on why the company never commercialized anything but I won’t post it here.
